Mathematics: Tools for Science

Over the last five decades, the use of computers and quantitative methods in all aspects of Earth Sciences has been increasing. As in other scientific fields (Medicine, Biology, ...), this evolution continues. It is, therefore, essential that geologists (as well as geophysicists and geochemists) are considered as competent in computation as their colleagues in other physical sciences.

This little book (in French) aims to teach simple and practical mathematics by using geological, geophysical and geochemical examples to illustrate mathematical concepts. Since mathematics and computer science often go hand in hand in Earth Sciences, you will also find on pages of this booklet some lines of programming in Python 3 language.

According to current scientific knowledge, there is no chromosome that biologically determines whether you will be good or bad at mathematics. The famous "hump" in mathematics is a harmful myth. You are not born good or bad at mathematics: you become it! It's like in sports: you are not born a 100-meter dash champion. In both cases, there is a secret to success: effort! Of course, some people will naturally have faster neurons or more resistant muscles, but to succeed the athlete will have to train… And the scientist will have to practice mathematical exercises. This is all the more true since mathematics is like a language. There is a vocabulary and a kind of mathematical grammar that can only be mastered with the help of regular practice.
